In 2017, the market size of LED plant lighting fixtures was approximately 193 million USD, with the market size of LED products used being 52 million USD. LEDinside estimates that by 2022, the market for plant lighting LED fixtures and packaging products will grow rapidly to 633 million USD and 151 million USD, respectively, with compound annual growth rates of 30% and 27% from 2018 to 2022.
In 2017, Europe accounted for 35% of the global LED plant lighting market. As major manufacturers gradually established plant factories in Europe, and governments in regions like the Netherlands and the UK actively advocated for the establishment of plant factories and proposed related subsidy policies, local market demand increased, leading to a continuous expansion of the market share in Europe, which reached 37% in 2018, making it the largest regional market share.
The main crops grown in European plant factories are tomatoes, leafy vegetables (such as beets), and herbs. The colorful and delicious varieties from the Netherlands are very popular, and consumer demand for Dutch tomatoes has surged. The main tomato producers are Duijvestijn, Rijk Zwaan, and Incotec. Among them, Duijvestijn ranks first, with an annual production area of 15 hectares and a capacity of up to 10 million kilograms. The tomato planting process requires collaboration with agricultural technology partners, such as Priva, which develops automated watering and climate control systems; the main lighting manufacturer is Philips Lighting (Signify).
Tomatoes do not require a specific light cycle but do require strong light, with an optimal light intensity of 40,000 to 70,000 Lux. Light levels exceeding 80,000 Lux or below 10,000 Lux are detrimental to growth. Tomatoes are warm-season vegetables and can generally adapt to a temperature range of 15 to 35°C, with the most suitable temperature being 20 to 30°C. When transplanting tomatoes, it is important to ensure uniform seedling size and orderly plant growth, as reducing shading between plants can increase sunlight exposure for the tomatoes.
Tomatoes do not have strict requirements for light hours, but having 16 hours of light per day results in the best plant growth, and short light periods can also allow for normal growth and fruiting. In production, efforts should be made to extend light hours or use artificial lighting to increase yield.
The global LED sports venue lighting market grew to 1.563 billion USD in 2022.
With the increasing importance of the sports industry in various regions and countries worldwide, coupled with the rapid improvement in the cost-performance ratio of LED lighting, LED sports lighting is also expected to experience rapid development. It is estimated that the global LED sports venue lighting market size was 673 million USD in 2017, and it will grow to 1.563 billion USD by 2022, with a compound annual growth rate of 16% from 2018 to 2022, outpacing general LED lighting growth.
The OLED lighting market grew to 191 million USD in 2021.
According to LEDinside statistics, the OLED lighting market is expected to grow to 191 million USD in 2021, with an average annual growth rate of 1.07%.
Although the high cost of OLED technology and its limited lifespan make it quite challenging to increase penetration rates, with technological breakthroughs, OLED lighting is rapidly rising. Additionally, the public's increasing environmental awareness and the demand for lighting fixtures that integrate life and artistic aesthetics make white OLED lighting very likely to become the next generation of lighting stars. In 2018, LGD, Acuity Brands, Konica Minolta, and OLEDWorks were the four major leaders in the OLED lighting industry.
